Rodrigues: how to get there

Written by Valerie, born in Mauritius · Updated

Rodrigues is about 560 km east of Mauritius, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Getting there is part of the adventure, but it is simpler than it sounds.

By plane (the easy way)

Almost everyone flies. Air Mauritius operates flights from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius to Sir Gaëtan Duval Airport at Plaine Corail, in the southwest of Rodrigues. The flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on a small turboprop plane.

  • Flights can sell out in school holidays and around Christmas: book as early as you can.
  • Luggage allowances on the small planes can be lower than on long-haul flights. Check your ticket.
  • If you arrive in Mauritius from Europe, leave a comfortable gap before your Rodrigues flight, or spend a night in Mauritius.

By ship (the slow way)

A passenger and cargo ship links Port Louis and Port Mathurin a few times a month. The crossing takes more than a day. It is a real experience, but only if you have time and do not mind the open sea. Schedules change, so check directly with the shipping company.

From the airport to your guesthouse

The airport is at the opposite end of the island from Port Mathurin. Most guesthouses offer a transfer: ask when you book. You can also rent a car or scooter; book in advance in high season, because the number of vehicles is limited.

How long to stay

Give Rodrigues at least four or five days. The island is small, but the pace is slow, and that is the point.
